PRIOR ACTION/VOTE

On May 7, 2024, the City Council awarded the construction contract for the Tot Lot Phase 2 Improvement Project, Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Nos. 22029, 22030, 22031, 22032, 22040, to R.E. Schultz Construction, Inc., in the amount of $451,850, plus a 15% contingency (Vote: 4-0).

CITY COUNCIL GOAL

Coordinate and deliver responsive, effective community services.

BACKGROUND

The Community Services Department recently completed a project to replace equipment at five (5) park locations: Alta Murrieta Sports Park, Eastgate Park, Rancho Acacias Park, Sycamore Park, and Firefighters Park. Replacement of the equipment at these five locations was Phase 2 of a broader Citywide tot lot replacement endeavor. Construction of the Phase 1 equipment replacements at four other parks is still underway.

Construction mainly consisted of removing existing play equipment and play surfaces, grading the subbase surface, assembling the new play equipment, pouring concrete foundations and ADA-compliant ramps into the new play surface, and installing new engineered wood fiber play surface material. The park improvements will significantly increase the level of service for individuals and all children.

Mobilization for the project began on Monday, June 3, 2024, and construction activities were substantially completed by Monday, September 9, 2024. The City’s contractor, R.E. Schultz Construction, successfully completed the project on time and on budget with no significant issues encountered.

The scope of work for each location included an additive bid item for drainage measures, which were not needed at most locations. As a result, the total construction cost will be reduced to approximately $418,000 from $451,850, once all final invoicing has been processed.

FISCAL IMPACT
