CITY COUNCIL GOAL
Coordinate and deliver responsive, effective community services.
BACKGROUND
The California State Library recently released a grant opportunity to provide selected libraries with ADA-accessible privacy booths, solar charging devices, and repair tool kits. The purpose of the State grant is to encourage library users to connect with their community and provide new ways to access information and learn new skills.
After discussing the details of the privacy booths with various City departments (Murrieta Fire and Rescue and Information Technology), the Murrieta Public Library submitted a request (Attachment 1) and was allocated one ADA-accessible privacy booth and ten solar charging devices. The privacy booth is an individual, free-standing, self-contained workstation that is designed to provide additional privacy to library patrons. What makes the workstation unique is that it is designed specifically for those who have to utilize a wheelchair. Once installed, the ADA-accessible privacy booth will be able to be reserved by Murrieta Public Library patrons. The solar charging devices will be added to the Library of Things collection for the public to check out.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no cost-sharing or obligation for the City to accept this grant award. However, it is not a reimbursable grant. The charging devices and privacy booth will be shipped directly to the Library at no cost to the City. Minor costs for the booth's installation could be realized, but funding is available within the Library’s Operating Budget to cover those expenses.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
None.
