DISCUSSION
On October 8, 2025, Murrieta Fire & Rescue (MFR) was awarded a $120,000, traffic safety grant from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), funded by the U.S Department of Transportation. The grant performance period began on October 1, 2025, and will continue through September 30, 2026.
This grant will be used to fund the replacement of MFR’s current auto-extrication equipment, which has become outdated due to modern vehicle configurations. The new tools will enhance MFR’s ability to perform rescues more safely and efficiently, improving both operational effectiveness and firefighter safety. Upgraded equipment will reduce exposure to roadside hazards and ensure the department is equipped to meet the growing demands of complex emergency incidents.
The grant directly supports MFR’s mission to deliver exceptional customer service by protecting life, property, and the environment through professional, all-risk emergency response.
FISCAL IMPACT
The OTS Program Grant requires no local match or cost share. As a reimbursable grant, the City must incur eligible expenses before requesting reimbursement. A budget appropriation is required to establish the grant's revenue and expenditure budgets. Staff recommends amending the Fiscal Year 2025/26 Operating Budget to establish a revenue budget of $120,000 in the Other Federal Grant Fund (377), under Intergovernmental Revenues-Federal (Account 42222), and appropriate $120,000 in Safety Equipment (Account 60880).
