CITY COUNCIL GOAL

Coordinate and deliver responsive, effective community services.

BACKGROUND

The City of Murrieta’s Roots and Remembrance program offers residents a heartfelt way to celebrate life’s milestones or honor the memory of loved ones. Through the Honor Tree and Honor Bench options, the initiative allows for the placement of memorial trees or engraved benches in select city parks, creating enduring tributes that grow more meaningful over time.

•                     Application & Coordination: Submission of form and costs, engraving approval, and installation managed in partnership with City staff.

•                     Available Tree Types: Crape Myrtle, Bailey Acacia, Redbud, Coast Live Oak, Little Gem Magnolia;

•                     Park Locations: Bear Valley, Mapleton, Mountain Pride, Shady Maple, Vintage Reserve;

•                     Cost:

o                     $150 for 15-gallon tree

o                     $450 for 24” box tree

o                     Optional engraved plaque available at extra cost

Honor Bench Program:

•                     Bench Specifications: 6 foot composite lumber;

•                     Park Locations: Along trails or appropriate planter areas pre-approved by Parks Maintenance Supervisor;

•                     Cost:

o                     $1,620 installation fee (includes labor and concrete pad);

o                     Applicant responsible for bench purchase and engraving

Request for Board Input:

To further enrich the program's legacy and ensure alignment with community needs, staff welcomes the Commission's feedback and suggestions on the following:

•                     Are the current tree types and park locations reflective of resident interests and environmental suitability?

•                     Would creating tiered options improve accessibility?

•                     Are there other commemorative elements (e.g., art installations or story plaques) worth exploring?

FISCAL IMPACT

The program operates at no cost to the City. All associated expenses are the responsibility of the applicant, and City staff support installation and coordination using current resources.
