BACKGROUND
Over the past 18 months, the Community Services Department (CSD) has had to close athletic courts and fields due to various unforeseen circumstances, including fire, smoke, heat, lightning, and rain. These closures directly impact youth sports such as Murrieta National Little League, Murrieta Valley Girls Softball, Murrieta Youth Soccer League, as well as the City’s adult sports leagues and outdoor recreation programming.
Current Guidelines: At present, the athletic field closure guidelines only account for rain events and residual wet weather conditions.
Proposed Update: Staff proposes drafting a more comprehensive closure structure to include:
• Various weather and environmental factors (e.g., fire, smoke, heat, lightning, rain)
• Recommended guidelines for sports leagues during extreme weather conditions
